Secondary Education (A)
The secondary education certification program consists of two grade bands: Middle Levels (grade 5-9) and Upper Levels (grades 7-12). By completing all course work and earning a passing score on the appropriate Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC), candidates earn certification in a specific content area for the grade band they choose. Candidates may add a second grade band certification by completing the Methods and Literacy courses in the other Secondary grade band not chosen for initial certification and passing the MTTC for that grade band.
The secondary education certification program consists of three components for each grade band: General Studies (both Common Core and Liberal Arts), Professional Education Studies and Content Area Studies (in the candidate’s major of choice). Candidates are also eligible to take courses to earn the Lutheran Teacher Diploma which certifies the candidate to serve in the teaching ministry of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The following charts outlines the courses required in the Professional Education Studies portion of the major. Note there is a difference between Middle Levels and Upper Levels.
